What this event involves

Teams build a working scientific model on the spot, then demonstrate it, explain the science behind it and describe its real-world use to the judges.

Twenty suggested topics are shared with schools in advance so students can plan and bring their materials.

What to bring or prepare

  • All materials needed to build the model — recycled and eco-friendly materials encouraged

Key rules

  • 1One team of two students per school. Only working models are accepted.
  • 2The model must be built during the competition, using only materials the team brings.
  • 3Teams must explain the scientific principle, the working mechanism and real-life applications.
  • 4Battery-operated or low-voltage electrical models are permitted.
  • 5Open flames, hazardous chemicals and unsafe electrical connections are prohibited.
